SARAH NEWLANDS
Sarah tells us what it is like to play with the CSO

Our orchestra, of highly-trained amateurs, semi-professional musicians and teachers is both a community and a family. As well as working hard and having fun in rehearsals, there are two subgroups that are taken very seriously here at CSO: the cake bakers, and the pub group! Players are warmly invited to be a part of either, or both.
Rehearsals are on Friday evenings - the perfect evening: no longer the working week, not quite the weekend! We rehearse at East Croydon United Reform Church, Addiscombe Grove, CR0 5LP between 19:30 and 21:45.
The venue is easily accessible by bus and tram, with many train routes from central London allowing easy access through East Croydon station. There is also free parking on site.
We have a busy schedule of concerts, performing at least five concerts a year so the schedule is challenging but rewarding. We perform in a number of local venues: Croydon Minster, St John the Evangelist Upper Norwood, Trinity School, and of course, the jewel in Croydon’s crown, the Fairfield Halls.
We charge an annual subscription, which in 2026-27 is £180 for a full season with a student/unwaged reduced rate of £120.
No fee is payable for your first term of membership, so for anyone thinking coming along to join us, there is no need to be shy!
We welcome new members of grade 8 standard and above in the strings, and would be very happy to hear from wind brass and percussion players of grade 8+ standard wishing to join our reserve/deputies’ list for opportunities to perform in rehearsals and concerts.
